10 New things to talk about

1. MACC Classes have adopted a young family for a Christmas Hamper.  We are adopting a young mom with a 3.5 yr old and an 8 month old.  Sign up gifts is in Ms. Abbot’s room.  Donations of food, gifts and money would be appreciated.

2. Group #2 begins curling… the second group of students went for their first curling lesson today.  Group #1 remained at school and worked on their Passion Projects, Empire Projects and Literature Circles (and grade 8 projects).

3. Classic Literature Circles are well underway.  The second response is now due and most students have finished their first books and are beginning the second ones.  “Black Beauty,” “The Christmas Carol,” “Secret Garden,” and “Peter Pan” have been added to the circle for next week.

4. Edmodo – Our Lit Circles are being posted to Edmodo.  You can sign up with a special parent code which will allow you to see the assignments and your son or daughters’ work.  Please email Ms Abbot for your Parent Code.

5. Hillcrest Canned Food Drive is just wrapping up, and the students have gotten very close to their goal of 1000 cans for the Food Bank.  Mr. Foot will have a very very special costume for a day if the students reach the goal.

6. Sock Drive – The Spirit Squad is coordinating a sock drive for the next two weeks.  Bring in a new pair of socks and they will go to the homeless in Greater Vancouver.

7.  Decorating Contest – Our classes will be competing with several other classes in the school for a door decorating contest.  Photos will be posted shortly.  Decorating will begin on Monday.

8. Empires Project – all grade 6/7’s are working on an Empires Project looking at the sustainability of civilizations and the rise and fall of empires.  There are 4 tasks to complete and the 1st is due December 9th.

9. Friends for Life group looked at positive self-talk and how to be a friend to yourself and to others.  How has your concept of friendship changed over the years? What was it like to be a good friend in preschool compared to being a good friend in middle school?

10. More and more Passion Projects are starting to take form.  Students continue to have time each week to work on a project or a skill of interest.  We are excited about the possibilities and look forward to giving updates about what the students are up to – check the links to the right.
