10 Great Things to Talk About

This week we started a mini-unit on Bard with Renee from Bard in the Classroom.  Our focus has been to enjoy her expertise and to finish up assignments and projects.

  1. When Renee first came to the school, we talked a bit about Shakespeare, his life, and his plays. Afterwards, we learned about different words Shakespeare created such as skim milk, eyeball, Olympian, blanket, bedroom, and many many many more.We acted out a few scenes from a comedy Shakespeare wrote called “A Mid-Summer’s Nights Dream”. She also had us play many different games involving some of the lines from different Shakespeare plays. Renee got us all very involved and got some of us to even wear silly costumes. Some of the costumes included a large donkey head, two over-sized crowns, and a blonde braided wig made out of bright yellow yarn. Over all we had a great time with Renee and we can’t wait for the next session next week. By Christine and Vanessa
  2. We learned about Shakespeare’s history as a poet and as a play-write.  We also started the Midsummer Night’s Dream, and we have gotten mid-way through. By Roger – We also learned about iambic pentameter.  We each drummed a beat and the class clapped it back.  Then we each chose 1 line and practices getting the rhythm of 10 beats.  We then transformed into a museum of talking statues acting out our lines.iambic pentameter drumming
  3. Over the past 3 days, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. To me and the rest of the group that I have talked to it was a very amusing experience. We have had a lot of fun so far learning and acting Shakespeare, and Ms. Renee makes sure everyone gets a chance to act in a big part in one of the acting times. She teaches us the roles progressively starting with the easy parts in the play and getting more detailed as we do more lessons. So far I have been a Puck Pal and Quince from A Midsummer Night’s Dream. By Liam
  4. Home Ec. this week has been really fun, sadly, I have still missed the cooking part of Home Ec. since we had to move on. Now we are doing sewing and it is just as fun, we even got to choose our own sewing kits and pick our skill level. I have actually never sown before and I am actually enjoying it so far, it is really fun, even when the needle or pin pokes you really hard once or twice. Lately, we had to bake lots of cupcakes for “A Slice of the World” that the Hillcrest Challenge class hosted Thursday night. Over all, being in Home Ec. has been really fun and I can’t wait to do it for my exploration next year! By Ted
  5. The French project we are working on right now is basically planning a 5 day trip to a country for our clients (we got to pick who our clients are).  We have to research hotels, restaurants, tourist destinations, and other activities for them to do while they’re there.  We then put all our information in a presentation and present it in French.  Ms. Moody’s class is due next Wednesday and Ms. Abbot’s class is due next Thursday. By Dayna
  6. This week we wrote letters to the future grade 6 MACC students.  In the letters we explained what it’s like to be in MACC and in grade 6.  Next week we will be making them MACC survival kits. The grade 7’s wrote top ten lists of things to know about Ms. Abbot and Ms. Moody. By Mia
  7. In Art, we are working on Clay Totem Poles with Earth elements of fire, water, earth and air.  We’ve just finished them and we’ll post some pictures of them soon.
  8. As the end of the term approaches rapidly, Ms. Abbot and Ms. Moody have been providing additional time in class for students to complete projects, math assignments and overdue work.  Student will know what work they need to complete and some will be bringing home work this weekend.
  9. There are permission forms currently due for the Music Enrichment trip to Granville Island; Yellow Team Swim and BBQ; Kayak Trip; Swim for some grade 6/7’s with Green team.  Please return them as soon as you can.
  10. We know that MACC students are veracious readers and as we get close to the end of the year please double check for classroom library and school library books.  We know they have loved the books, but we would love for the kids next year to as well.

During the coming week we will be doing the Great Canadian Shoreline Clean-Up at Mundy Lake.

10 Great Things to Talk About

As many activities start to wrap up for the year, Ms. Abbot and Ms. Moody are delighted to see so many of the students stepping up to take on both leadership and to share their perspectives and opinions.

1. After several weeks of preparation, today we held our MACC Model UN.  12 students from the Charles Best Model UN Club facilitated and supported our classes as they met as the World Health Organization, UN World Tourism Organization, UN HABITAT and UNESCO.  The students represented different countries and debated topics of international migration, access to medicine, sustainable tourism and gender equity in science.  At least two of the committees passed resolutions suggesting solutions to an issue they discussed.

2. We started the week with a WaterWise Wisdom presentation by the Life Saving Society.  The presentation focused on getting properly trained, enjoying boating safely, wearing a life jacket or PFD, and being an environmentally aware boater.  We learned the difference between a PFD and a life jacket.  And we learned that people can get their Pleasure Craft Operators License at 8 years old (although you still need to be 16 years old to operate a motorboat).  How do you prepare to be out on the water?  Complete the safe boaters checklist, share your trip plan with someone, check the weather and dress appropriately, have knowledge about the boat and where you are going, get training.  We got to see a lot of safety equipment including: a air horn, flares, flashlights, sun screen, quick dry clothes, an anchor, a ladder, bailer bucket, a fire extinguisher, paddles, first aid kit and a VHF radio.http://ow.ly/i/2djn7 &  http://ow.ly/i/2djAW & http://ow.ly/i/2djG9

3. Home Ec students have started their sewing projects. The projects are individual and most of them are pillows or stuffies. In Art, students are working with Clay.  “We are building a pencil holder or a totem pole,” students said.

4. This week we said goodbye to Mamedy.  He has been working with us en francais.  We played games and learned new vocabulary.  “He made French more fun, kind of like a game,” students said.  Mamedy is off to explore more of Canada with his brother before returning to France.  Merci! Bon voyages Mamedy.

5. Ms. Moody introduced the second lesson in our Shakespeare unit.  We explored some of the impact Shakespeare has had on our language, common phrases and characterization.  We designed our own Shakespearean words and oxymoron’s.  More to come!

6. Math, math and more math.  The year end cutoff for math tests is rapidly approaching.  Some students will be receiving invitations to join Ms. Abbot for lunch, if they are requiring additional time to complete the learning outcomes for their grade level.

7. Strong Kids this week focused on problem solving.  Students had the chance to role play several situations and try out different solutions.

8. Grade 8’s working on filming the year end LIPDUB.  All the grade 6/7’s watched little bits throughout the morning and look forward to seeing the final edit at the Grade 8 Leaving Ceremony.

9. Wacky Wednesday brought out all the wacky socks.  We had neon and stripes!  We had superheroes with capes!  We had mis-match and fuzzy! We had short ankle socks and we had knee nigh socks.

10. Permission Forms came home this week for all year end field trips.  And a reminder that we’ll be learning on Monday and students are not in session.  Enjoy the Professional Development Day!
